Help us get 360 signatures from EP members!

Dear followers,

We need your support! Beat the Microbead partner Seas At Risk has been working with the British MEP (Member of the European Parliament) Catherine Bearder to develop a written declaration from the European Parliament.

The declaration highlights the problem of microplastics in general and calls on the Commission to address the issue of microbeads in personal care products. This kind of declaration is a good way for the Parliament to put pressure on the Commission to develop legislation. While several countries have already called for action, the Commission is still hesitant. Additional pressure from MEPs might help.

The declaration needs 360 signatures from MEPs to pass and we have until 1 May to get these signatures. This is where we need your help! MEPs are far more likely to sign when under some pressure from their home countries, so if you are willing to help, please write an email to your local MEP asking them to sign the written declaration.

This is how it works:

  1. Find your national MEP (member of the European Parliament) using Votewatch.
  2. Write an email either using the text in the attached template (Attachment 1) or write your own version.
  3. Quote ‘Written declaration (006/2016) on the reduction of microplastics pollution’ in your email subject.
  4. Attach the ‘Sign-up Sheet’ to your email (Attachment 2).
  5. Attach the ‘Written Declaration’ in your language (see Attachments).
  6. Send the email with attachments to your MEP. You can find their email addresses by clicking the EP member of your choice on Votewatch and look up his contact information at the bottom right of the page.
  7. An extra action is to Tweet them if they use Twitter. SAR have written a text you can link to: here.
