Langeoog, January 9th 2017 – Thousands of plastic Kinder Surprise eggs washed up on the German Wadden Sea island of Langeoog after a heavy storm. The eggs are thought to have come from a Danish container ship that lost containers during the storm.
Kinder Surprise, with its little plastic toys inside the egg, is very popular in Germany, and all the children on Langeoog gladly helped clear up the eggs. The German TV broadcaster NDR also reported that much plastic washed up on the east side of the island after the storm. The coastline appears to be full of LEGO, plastic bags, wheels, furniture parts and even prams. The island’s residents are now organizing a beach clean to clean up all the rubbish.
According to Monteray Bay Aquarium’s research institute, about 10,000 containers end up in the oceans every year. The currents ultimately disperse the containers around the world.
A comparable disaster happened last year when thousands of plastic bottles of Vanish detergent ended up on the beaches of Cornwall in England, coloring the coastline pink. While plastic toys, products and packaging continue to be shipped by container ship, this sort of ‘surprise’ will keep happening.
