108 NGOs, together in Nairobi for UNEA 5.2, the UN summit on the environment, issued a joint statement today expressing their great concern about the consequences of the Russian invasion of Ukraine. The statement points to the importance of protecting the environment in areas of conflict. Plastic Soup Foundation is one of the signatories.
The Russian military invasion in Ukraine is a humanitarian tragedy. Apart from all the suffering, it has a terrible impact on the environment. The effects will manisfest themselves for years after the violence has ended. Strikingly, in 2016 Ukraine submitted a resolution at the UN environment summit (UNEA 2) about the importance of protecting the environment in areas affected by armed conflict. Now Ukraine itself has become such an area.
