Latvia

  • There is a charge imposed on the use of plastic bags.
  • According to the EU SUP Directive, EU members will have to ban single-use plastics from the market by mid-2021. This decision covers products such as cotton bud sticks, cutlery (forks, knives, spoons, and chopsticks), beverage stirrers, straws, plates (including paper plates with plastic lining), and many more.
  • For packaging manufacturers it is planned to develop requirements for the amount of recycled materials used in production, making it so that from 1 January 2030 onward packaging sold in Latvia is to contain at least 30% of recycled plastic, according to the legislative draft.
