New in the PlasticFreeFuture app: scan your clothes for plastic Are you wearing plastic today? Probably. Almost 70 percent (!) of all textiles worldwide are made from synthetic fibres, produced from fossil fuels such as crude oil. And that share is growing.
But how do you actually know what you're buying when you shop? We've recently made that a lot easier.

How it works

With the new feature in our PlasticFreeFuture app, you simply scan any clothing label. Within a minute, you'll see whether the garment contains plastic fibres such as polyester or nylon, and you'll get suggestions for alternatives. That way, you know better what you're wearing and can make a conscious choice for plastic-free clothing.
The app is free to download from the App Store. You can already install the app on Android too; the new feature will follow there later. You can also use it to scan your personal care products for plastic.

Time for a warning on plastic clothing

Synthetic clothing is one of the ways we are exposed to microplastics. Research into microplastics in the human body raises serious questions about the consequences for our health. So why isn't there a clear warning on clothing made from plastic, just like on cigarettes?
Plastic shouldn't be the standard in our clothing. That's why, alongside this new app feature, we are launching the SHEIN On You campaign!

What we want to achieve:

  • That people recognise plastic in their clothing;
  • That we understand what this means;
  • That we think critically about why synthetic fibres have become the standard and how it got this far.
Join SHEIN On You

Since 30 September, we have been building a movement together with consumers, organisations and partners that makes plastic in fashion visible and calls for change in the industry. Share what you discover with #SHEINOnYou.

What we've done so far:

  • We supported Sustainable Fashion Week UK with our campaign against ultra-fast fashion: SHEIN On You;
  • On 30 September, we took part as experts in the Ocean Week conference in Brussels by Seas At Risk, Pew and Ecos: Ocean plastics unravelled – The microplastics hidden in your closet;
  • During Dutch Sustainable Fashion Week in Haarlem, we presented an installation.

Coming up:

On 24 October, we will join a panel discussion at African Fashion Week Amsterdam: Fashion's Plastic Problem - Microplastics, Health and the Cost of Synthetic Overproduction.

Will you sign our pledge against (ultra) fast fashion?
