Four PFAS compounds were found most frequently
The RIVM analysed breast milk for 29 different PFAS compounds. PFOS and PFOA were detected in almost all samples. PFNA and PFHxS were also commonly found. PFOS was detected most frequently and at the highest concentrations. Of the 29 compounds analysed, 21 were found rarely or not at all.
18% above the health-based guidance value
In 18% of the breast milk samples, PFAS concentrations exceed the health-based guidance value. According to the RIVM, harmful health effects cannot be ruled out in these cases. PFAS can affect the immune system.
Study confirms previous findings
The results are consistent with earlier RIVM research showing that almost all people in the Netherlands have excessive levels of PFAS in their blood. Together, both studies show that people in the Netherlands continue to be widely exposed to PFAS through, among other things, food and drinking water.
The RIVM emphasises that breastfeeding provides important health benefits for both mother and child and therefore, like the Dutch Nutrition Centre, recommends continuing to breastfeed whenever possible.
PFAS do not belong in our bodies
According to the RIVM, PFAS levels in people can only decrease if exposure is reduced. This requires measures to prevent PFAS from entering food, drinking water and the environment.
Together with several other European countries, the Netherlands has submitted a proposal for a European ban on all PFAS compounds. In addition, companies should reduce PFAS emissions into the air and water as much as possible.
