Concerns over plastics treaty grow as Norway reconsiders UN funding

Norwegian funding for environment programme uncertain: concerns grow over progress on plastics treaty
New uncertainty is emerging around the international negotiations for a global plastics treaty. Norway, the largest donor to the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), is reassessing how much funding it wants to provide to the organization.
 
The news is causing concern among countries and environmental organizations. UNEP is leading the negotiations on the plastics treaty, which have been ongoing since 2022. The goal of the treaty is to tackle global plastic pollution.
 
Unfortunately, the negotiations have been progressing slowly. Despite six rounds of talks, countries have still not reached agreement on how plastic production and use should be limited.
 
According to sources, Norway has indicated that all funding agreements are currently “on hold” until new budget decisions have been made.
