In 2019 we developed extensive new educational material about plastic soup for (lower) secondary schools (age 12-15 years) in the Netherlands, together with GLOBE Netherlands. This educational material was made possible with the financial support from the C&A Foundation and donations from Dutch high schools. The digital lessons meet learning objectives as specified by the Dutch Ministry of Education and include research and experiment options, framed towards the school subjects: geography, biology, physics, chemistry and social science.
The Introduction lesson about the sources, consequences of and possible solutions for the plastic soup is an online interactive lesson with films and quiz questions. After the introductory lesson, the teenagers are challenged by popular ambassadors of the Plastic Soup Foundation to do experiments and actions and think about their own daily use of plastics They can choose between 14 challenges: Plastic Diet, Plastic Packaging in Supermarkets, Animal Suffering, Plastic Debate, Plastics in Water, Plastic-free Festivals, Plastic Music, Plastic-free Toiletries, Save Your Butt, Snack Tracker, Trash Hunt, Chewing Gum, Trash Hunt Game, Sinking or Floating Plastics.
The challenges are promoted by well-known ambassadors of the Plastic Soup Foundation, including DJ’s, singer-songwriters, YouTubers and radio and TV presenters. Each challenge starts with a short film from the ambassador.
The educational material is receiving extensive positive feedback and we have plans to translate and adapt these initiatives to other countries once the funds become available.
